The UXU Ranch main lodge and cabins border a large pasture at 6200 feet amidst a lush pine forest. The ranch has been in operation as a Dude Ranch since 1929 when the original owner Bob Rumsey began hosting families at his Ranch. Since that time, the UXU has been operated by several different families and gone through several changes and a few owners.

The UXU Guest Ranch is located 17 miles from the east entrance to the Yellowstone National Park and is noted for its outstanding scenery. It is a very spacious Ranch and situated on the North Fork of the Shoshone River. The abundance of adequate water and open space allows the UXU Ranch a perfect setting for dining in the open air while overlooking horses eating in a lush green mountain pasture.

Horse Back Riding at the Ranch is one the main reasons people choose a Dude Ranch vacation and at the UXU you will find a diverse range of riding terrain that will allow everyone from the most seasoned cowboy to the upstart Green Horn a chance to enjoy this special activity. Rides range from one hour to all day and we at the UXU try accommodate all levels of riding experience. With horses chosen just for you for the week and rides focused on what you would like, be it loping through a mountain meadow to cresting the high ridges, we can deliver!

Fly-Fishing at the Ranch, where the North Fork of the Shoshone River runs through it, to small beaver ponds or even the great Yellowstone Glacier Lake, is an experience that will be treasured. Our resident fly-fishing guide has worked them all, knows the best spots and understands the needs of the guest. Our guide will be glad to work with you on your cast whether it be beginner or advanced and has the patience to assure everyone has a great time. The guide also knows when to leave well enough alone and allow the more seasoned individuals to spend a week doing what they enjoy in a place like no other!
Grant R. "Tuff", Heidi and Ray Flaharty combine their almost 70 years of life experiences in hospitality, travel, ranching, corporate sales and marketing, guiding and outfitting to offer guests of the Ranch an impeccable vacation experience in the Wyoming mountains. The Flahartys have maintained and expanded upon the rich tradition at the UXU Guest Ranch in offering guests a full week of activities, excellent cuisine and a full wine and bar compliment.

The ranch is located in the mountains with an elevation of 6200 feet. The weather varies during the summer months and typically in June and September the high is in the 70's and the low normally in the 40's. In July and August the high can be in the 90's but normally in the 80's and the low is normally in the lower 60's. Watch this website for the weather before you depart. Also, the humidity is around 20 percent during the summer. It is very dry.

The ranch is very casual, however some people do like to gussy up a bit for dinner. This does not mean coat and tie but it does mean we discourage shorts or T-shirts for men. You will be staying in a wood cabin just like the cowboys of yesteryear, although these are far more luxurious and in your Cabins we do provide; robes, body lotion, conditioning shampoo, glycerin soap, bar soap, Q-tips, cotton balls, down pillows and comforters and minimal reading material (there is a small library in the lodge).

Rocky Mountain Gourmet

If you're of the opinion that "gourmet food" and "dude ranch" don't belong in the same sentence together, think again. Long famous for its exceptional food and wine, the UXU has recently expanded our menu and added a number of international selections to our wine list. Meals at the UXU are an event themselves!

Start your day with a simple meal of juice, fruit, cereals and fresh homemade fruit muffins or live a little while you are on vacation and have the full breakfast of scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, grits, hash browns or other potatoes.

Try one of our mushroom, bacon and goat cheese omelets and face the day with a new vigor!
Lunch at the Ranch always includes a home made soup du jour, sandwiches on fresh made pita or herbed focciacia and ciabatta breads with your favorite meats, cheeses and vegetable trimmings. On the trail, you can expect marinated tenderloin kebobs on the open fire and a cookie made fresh that morning! Dinners at the Ranch speak for themselves. Whatever your culinary tastes are we should be able to excite your palate! Leg of Lamb, Tenderloin of Elk, Buffalo Filet, Butter-flied Trout prepared by our chefs just for you!

A Week at the UXU RANCH

Your stay with us will be uniquely tailored to your specific preferences. But for a general idea of what it's like to visit the ranch, here's a look at a "typical week" at the UXU:

SUNDAY
Guests are welcomed to the ranch and from noon to 3pm. Later, guests are treated to a wine and cheese reception on the banks of the Shoshone River. You'll have a chance to meet your fellow guests, learn some local history, and get your bearings around the ranch before dinner.

MONDAY
Get to know our horses and take a ride around the property. Monday's two horseback rides allow guests to become comfortable with both your horse and the beautiful mountain scenery around the Ranch. Later in the afternoon, try your hand at softball at 6000 feet above sea level.

TUESDAY
Tour nearby Yellowstone, the nation's first and best National Park. See grizzlies, elk, moose, wolves and natural scenery unlike anywhere else in the world. Enjoy cowboy songs around the campfire while dining on Ribs, Chicken and Catfish in a truly Southern manner!

WEDNESDAY
Saddle up for an all-day horseback ride featuring a gourmet barbecue lunch. Spend the late afternoon at our shooting range working on some target practice or soak in the hot tub with a cool drink.

THURSDAY
Pick your favorite activity: horseback riding, fly fishing, hiking, or just relax. Then regroup for a visit to Old Trail Town and the Cody Nite Rodeo.

FRIDAY
Another chance to do exactly what you want on this open day in the schedule. Afternoon softball is always an option, or visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody. Most guests choose to spend the day rafting on the Shoshone River.

SATURDAY
Pack your bags, take your last pictures and say goodbye to new friends and old.
------------------------------------------
You can choose to do as much or as little as you like. Some guests prefer to ride horses every day, others can't get enough fishing, while many choose to just kick back, relax and enjoy the slower pace of life in the shadow of Yellowstone. Regardless of what you're looking for, rest assured you'll find it at the UXU Ranch.
