Grapevine Canyon Ranch in Arizona
Grapevine Canyon Ranch in Arizona

Grapevine Canyon Guest Ranch, an Arizona dude and working cattle ranch, offers the best horseback riding vacations, pack trips and adventure horse treks, in the prettiest part of Arizona.

Grapevine's remote, unspoiled location offers an escape from the outside world. The box by the gate invites you to “leave your problems here” - and you will feel your spirit lighten as you travel up the narrow, winding road to the ranch buildings.

There is something magical about Grapevine Canyon that will make you feel at home the minute you arrive. The canyon was a refuge for the Chiricahua Apaches in years gone by, and it remains today a refuge for people escaping from the many stresses of modern life, a place where they can unwind, regroup and refresh their spirit.

It is said that the outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man, and our horses, whether you are a beginner or an experienced rider, will share with you a new world of hidden canyons, lofty ridges, old Indian trails and endless vistas, making for a relaxing, memorable vacation.

The Dragoon Mountains, rich in western history as well as Indian history, were once the home of Apache chief Cochise, and infamous Geronimo, feuding cowboys and Indians, miners seeking riches in the towns of Pearce, Tombstone and Bisbee, all notorious names in the history of the Old West. As well as the best of trail rides and advanced rides, we also offer unparalleled rest and relaxation, in the most healthy and tranquil getaway vacation possible.

Enjoy unforgettable star gazing under spectacular night skies, birding, camping, and hiking. Trail ride well trained, willing and responsive horses, enjoy our secluded cabins and soul satisfying home cooked meals, come for a group retreat, a family reunion, anniversary, or special occasion. Spend your holidays with us, and enjoy the best of Arizona vacations on Arizona’s favorite dude ranch!

Activities:

Activities and facilities at the ranch include single action shooting, target archery, sightseeing to local museums, hiking, bird watching, relaxing by the swimming pool or enjoying the hot tub. The ranch also offers a video and games room, pool table, table tennis, cookouts, as well as weekly evening entertainment with traditional western music. There is a golf course close by.

Accommodations:

Lodgings at Grapevine are first rate - cozy, comfortable, yet spacious. With individual furnishings, no two are alike. All have numerous amenities for your convenience, including coffee pots, bathrobes, pool towels, hair dryers and minibar stocked with wine, liquor and soft drinks, as well as an assortment of snacks.

Guest lodging is both air cooled and heated, although heat is typically welcome only in the evenings. All accommodations and facilities at Grapevine are non/smoking. All rooms are spacious and offer comfortable chairs for lounging. Shady groves of Arizona oak and manzanita provide seclusion for the ranch buildings.

To help you escape from the "every day" there are no phones or TV's in the room, although there is a televison/video room in the lodge buildings. Due to the water shortage we will no longer have laundry facilities on the premises.

Horse Riding:

In a nutshell, the riding program at Grapevine Canyon Ranch consists of:

  • Daily three hour trail rides into the mountains
  • Daily two hour loping rides for qualified riders
  • Daily one hour afternoon (or evening in June, July and August) rides, except on Sundays
  • All day rides lasting 6-7 hours, in the mountains – these rides do not repeat for two weeks, with the exception of the ride to the Chiricahua National Monument, and the one to Old Fort Bowie, which are offered every Tuesday and Thursday
  • Once weekly gymkhana events on Sundays
  • Cattle “cowboy” rides twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays
  • Twice weekly cattle team penning, on Wednesdays and Saturdays

Horses at Grapevine:

At Grapevine, we have horses for all levels of experience, from the total beginner to the eventer or show rider, and indeed, over the years, many of our guests have come from the ranks of professional riders, here on a “busman’s holiday”.  However, it is the beginner rider who perhaps benefits the most, by discovering the beauty and nobility of the horse. No need to be apprehensive – we have riding lessons, from basic to advanced, for those who want to learn more, and each new rider, whatever his or her experience level, is given an orientation lesson before the first ride. But it is the horses who contribute the most to the rookie rider – they are kind horses, because they are well treated, well fed and rested, and so they are ready to be their rider’s friend – and what better way to see this fabulous country than from the backside of your new, four legged buddy!

Meals:

The meals here at Grapevine are delectable, to say the least and everything is home made, from the scrumptious, fresh bread, baked daily, to the delicious desserts and ice creams.  As quite a few of our guests stay for several weeks, we offer a six-week rotating menu. Breakfast is the only meal ordered from a menu, and offers a wide selection of various egg dishes, such as plain, Mexican or cheese omelets, the normal selection of eggs, bacon or sausage, delicious pancakes, and, for the light eaters, a fabulous breakfast parfait of no sugar granola layered with low fat yogurt and fruit, just to mention a few. Various sweet breads such as fresh made banana, blueberry bread, pineapple or pumpkin breads are offered daily, together with a selection of fruit juices. Breakfast is served from 7:30 am during the autumn, winter and spring months, and from 6:30 am during the summer months.
